Innovations in Reading Prizes

Description: "... institutions that use particularly innovative methods to generate excitement and a passionate engagement with books and literature will be rewarded for their creativity and leadership. We are seeking applications from individuals and institutions that demonstrate a commitment to literature and the promotion of reading for its own sake. Important criteria are creativity, risk-taking, and a visionary quality, as well as a novel way of presenting books and literature. We are less interested in programs where the focus is on basic literacy and the pedagogy of reading. We strongly encourage all applicants to read about past winners on our website to get a sense of the kinds of programs we support."

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Summer Reading Grants
Amount awarded: up to $3000

Description: "... to help with the implementation or expansion of summer reading programs. Programs must target Pre-K through 12th grade students who are new readers, below grade level readers or readers with learning disabilities." Use their store locator to confirm that your library is located within 20 miles of a Dollar General store in order to qualify.

Citizens-Save-Libraries Grant
Amount awarded: two days of on-site, in-person training
Deadline: March 15, 2013

Description: "The 20 grants will support advocacy at the local level for libraries with troubled budgets by sending expert advocates to library sites over the next two years. The expert advocates will help friends of the library groups, library directors and trustees develop individual blueprints for advocacy campaigns to restore, increase or save threatened library budgets." "Grant winners will receive a power guide – which will also be freely available to all library advocates on the United for Libraries website by Feb. 1– that will lay out a step-by-step blueprint for libraries to follow in generating advocacy campaigns."
